I’m not a fan of titanium dioxide since it is rated Group 2B (possible human carcinogen) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. In addition the titaniuim dioxide here is micronized. Although it has been said by some in the natural cosmetic industry that micronized titanium dioxide is not absorbed by the skin, there is still a question about the distinction between micronized and nanoparticles as used in these types of products. Some manufacturers use these terms interchangeably.

Rejuva Minerals is a mineral makeup line that was developed primarily as a “safer” cosmetic product.
There are several different categories of products:
The Purely Basic line is made primarily from rice powder and iron oxides. This was designed for those with sensitive skin.
The Organic Botanicals products add Kaolinite (White Cosmetic Clay), Boron Nitride and some botanical extracts to the Purely Basic ingredients. Boron Nitride is an inert chemical compound considered a nuisance dust. It is associated with pneumoconiosis if inhaled. Otherwise, it is claimed to not be harmful. This should not be an issue considering how little of the powders you use.
The Baked Mineral products have the longest list of ingredients, including mica serecite, herbal extracts, oils and essential oils. These may not be appropriate for those who tend to have sensitive skin or allergies.
The above products are free nanoparticles, micronized minerals and GMOs, as well as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. They do offer an eyeliner pencil which contains titanium dioxide.
They also offer a moisturizer which contains at least a couple ingredients I don’t recommend: propylene glycol cocoate (aka PEG-8) and grapefruit seed extract.
I was delighted to see a mineral makeup product that was made from only rice powder and iron oxides. It is so hard to find a mineral makeup product that contains so few ingredients. This, in my opinion, is the best they have to offer.
However, I was disappointed in the moisturizer. PEG is an ingredient that can be contaminated with the cancer-causing chemical 1,4-dioxane. And grapefruit seed extract is highly controversial since there have been studies showing that it’s antimicrobial effects are due to toxic chemicals, mostly benzethonium chloride, but also triclosan and parabens.
I recommend staying away from the moisturizer. However, their dry powders and lip products are a good makeup choice.

Product Review - Soleo Organics All Natural Sunscreen
Sunscreens are controversial. The mainstream says you absolutely must slather it on every time you go out into the sun. However, sunscreen prevents your body from making vitamin D. You need some exposure to the sun, without sunscreen … during the time of day when the sun is not at its hottest, before 10 am or after 4 pm, in order for you body to make vitamin D.
With natural skin care growing in popularity, there are a lot of sunscreen products claiming to be natural. However, not all of them live up to the claims when you read their ingredients lists.
There’s also the discussion about the so called natural sun protective ingredients zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Are they micronized? Are they nano size? Or are they larger particle size? In the non-micronized larger size, they go onto the skin leaving a white film. Most sun products contain the micronized or nano sized particles.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified titanium dioxide as a possible carcinogen. Some companies now leave it out, but still use the zinc oxide.
Recent research is reported to say that micronized zinc oxide is not absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream if it is greater than 100 nanometers in size. That is not true for particles less than 100 nanometers.
Soleo Organics recently introduced their All Natural Sunscreen with 22.3% zinc oxide. The rest of the ingredients include oils and botanical extracts.
The zinc oxide is well above the 100 nanometer size, according to the company.
One other ingredient caught my attention… vegetable oils. They specifically named four other oils. Why is vegetable oil listed as ingredient instead of naming the specific vegetable oils? It usually means they’re hiding something. When I contacted the company they did admit that the vegetable oils included soy oil and canola oil, both undesirable oils. However, they said it only makes up about 1% of the product.
Compared to the majority of the sunscreen products on the market, this is definitely a better choice.
However, here is an even better choice … without the vegetable oil.
Finding the ingredients lists for natural skin care products
Beware of natural skin care product lines that don’t list all their ingredients on their website. If a skin care product line that claims to be natural or organic lists only “key” ingredients or only names a few natural or herbal ingredients, then it’s very likely that theyhave something to hide.
Most truly natural skin care companies, who really believe that all their ingredients are safe and healthy, will provide the complete ingredients list on their website.
At worst, at least until today, an e-mail to the company will generally get the ingredients list or a link to where it can be found.
However, I was sent on a wild goose chase yesterday and today when I tried to get the ingredients in the new “Pink Body” line by Victoria’s Secret. They claim the ingredients in their new skin care products are natural, organic and 100% vegan. If you try to locate the ingredients on their website, all you will find is two or three ingredients listed in a brief description of each product.
When I see a skin care company that claims such high standards for the ingredients in their supposedly natural and organic skin care products on top of alleging they are also “green,” I want to check them out!
Because I didn’t find complete ingredients lists on their website, I did the usual and sent them an e-mail. The response I got back mentioned the same few ingredients they list on their website and they directed me back to the website. When I replied and said I wanted the COMPLETE ingredients lists for their products, they sent me the phone number for the lab that does their MSDS’s (manufacturers safety data sheets). I called and spoke with a very helpful gentleman who then told me that the MSDS’s don’t contain ALL the ingredients in each product. He then gave me the corporate phone number for Victoria’s Secret and a lab that actually manufactures some of the products.
I wasn’t about to waste any more time trying to chase down all the ingredients in these supposedly organic, natural and vegan skin care products. If they put that much effort into making the ingredients unavailable to the consumer, I can only assume that they have something to hide.
Now it is up to Victoria’s Secret to come forward with full disclosure! I dare them!
In the meantime, make sure you can read the entire ingredients list and all the ingredients are safe for any skin care product you intend to buy. Dying To Look Good will help you decipher the safety of ingredients you find on the labels when you shop.
